Leicester City and Plymouth Argyle fans came together at the weekend to back the Mercury’s Loros appeal.

A squad of Loros volunteers held a bucket collection before Saturday’s 125th anniversary match and both sets of fans dug deep into their pockets as they made their way to the Walkers Stadium.

Senior Loros fund-raiser Adrian Walker, who organised the collection, said: “People have been fantastic and despite having Children in Need last night, they are still digging deep and throwing their cash in the buckets.

“Anyone who missed the chance to donate outside the ground can still give to Loros on our website. We are obviously keen to get as much support as possible.

“All funds collected will be used to help provide care for terminally-ill patients and support for their families.

“I’d also like to say thank you to the Leicester Mercury and Leicester City Football Club for making this opportunity possible.”

Among the fans stopping to donate was Tracy Noon, 35, from Sileby.

She said: “I like to support Loros because my grandma died of cancer 15 years ago and they are a really good cause to donate too.

“I also give £5 a month through my bank and I take part in the Loros lottery.

“They do a lot of good work and I know that without the help of people donating they wouldn’t be able to do half of the work they already do.”

Leicester fan Michael Wesson, 59, of Sileby, said: “It’s a good cause and I’ll do what I can to support it because I lost my wife to cancer earlier this year.

“Loros do a fantastic job of looking after people and I hope others are generous when it comes to digging deep, I think it’s great that the Leicester Mercury has picked Loros as its chosen charity.”

Fund-raiser June Wilson, 70, from Newfoundpool, has been shaking her bucket for Loros for 12 years.

She said: “People are being generous and I’m getting a bit of money.

“I’m trying to make the most because I’m the oldest and I’ve been doing it the longest, so there’s a sense of pride involved as well.

“I enjoy doing this, I was an auxiliary nurse for 40 years at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and this is my way of continuing to help people.”
