Naked ambition to raise environment awareness

An environmentalist is planning to take part in a naked run to raise awareness about the UK marine environment.

Malcolm Hunter, from Leicester Friends of the Earth, will be running alongside nude cyclists at the event in London next Saturday.

The World Naked Bike Ride is held every year in cities around the world in early June.

The biggest will be the London ride, which last year attracted around 1,000 participants.

The aim is to promote cycling, challenge negative attitudes to the human body and protest at oil dependency.

Malcolm will be running, rather than cycling, to promote the message: "We are running out of time."

He said: " If we don't act now many fish populations will be pushed beyond the point of no return and there will be no long-term future for any kind of fishing industry."

A study published last year, in the journal Science, identified the marine environment around the UK as among the most degraded in the world, with many fish stocks close to extinction and much of the sea bed turned into a "lifeless desert".
