Waste policy is clarified
In partnership with the local district and borough councils, the county council is working to minimise waste and to boost recycling and composting to 58 per cent – Leicestershire is one of the top performing areas in the country but there will always be some waste leftover that will have to be treated or land filled.
We cannot keep sending this to landfill.
We need to find the best process to treat this waste, but want to stress that no decisions have been taken on the kind of facility nor a site.
It is completely wrong for anyone to say or imply that the county council is planning to build an incinerator.
The county council will be looking for a private waste company to run a facility. We are open to all options and it is the company which would propose the kind of facility and technology used as well as the site.
As part of the Government process which we have to follow, we have been required to provide potential sites and have bought a piece of land in Bardon in addition to a site at Whetstone.
However, there are no definite plans for either pieces of land as waste companies are also free to propose their own locations.
It is important to reiterate that no decisions have been taken on a site and that we are committed to considering all methods of treating waste to avoid landfill.
Members of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership have visited a range of sites in this country and Europe which use various waste treatments and further visits will take place.
