A woman was fighting for her life in hospital last night after being hit by a bus in Leicester.

The pedestrian, described as being in her 60s, suffered multiple injuries in the collision in London Road, Leicester, near to Victoria Park.

Police said she was "very poorly".

Her injuries were said to be potentially life-threatening.

The bus, which was full of passengers heading into the city from Evington, was turning right from Evington Road into London Road when the incident happened at about 10am.

The woman was crossing from a traffic refuge to the corner of London Road and Granville Road.

Bus passenger Nayan Joshi, 45, who was going to work, said: "I was sitting at the front on the top deck and there were quite a lot of people on board.

"The bus was moving as normal, just turning right after the light went green with other cars up ahead of it.

"I felt the impact as it hit the lady. It was really bad."

Mitz Chohan, who works in Domino's Pizza, on London Road, said: "When I came to open up it had already happened.

"I just saw them lifting the lady on to a stretcher. I don't know if she was conscious or not. It was pretty nasty."

The city-bound lane of London Road was shut alongside Victoria Park in the wake of the accident.

Police investigators carried out a full survey of the scene, while traffic officers redirected vehicles.

The First Leicester bus stood where the accident happened, with yellow markings on the ground showing where the woman had been injured.

The road was reopened at about 2pm.

A police spokeswoman appealed for anyone who saw the collision but has not made a statement to get in touch.

She said: "We were called at 9.58am yesterday to a report of a road traffic collision involving a bus and woman pedestrian.

"The pedestrian was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary with potentially life-threatening injuries and is described as 'very poorly'.

"We are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact Det Con 4055 Rachel Marston in the serious collision investigation team."

Steve Zanker, spokesman for bus company First Leicester, said: "This is a very unfortunate incident that has occurred.

"We are conducting a full investigation ourselves into what has happened."
