Our opinions mature with age
With regard to Eric Goodyear's comments on UKIP, fortunately, people's opinions mature with age.
In 1975, the year of the first EU referendum, I was 33. I thought it was a good idea to stay in the common market, a free trade area seemed sensible, and to my shame I encouraged people to vote yes to stay in. How wrong I was.
I did not know it would mean we could no longer fish in our own waters, I did not realise our Parliament would no longer be able to have the final say on the laws of our land, and I didn't expect it to be forbidden to buy a pork chop with a kidney in it.
A free trade area is one thing; a federation of dissimilar countries is another. Do we want to subject our children to another Yugoslavia?

“There is a huge difference between the BNP and UKIP. The BNP is as minority party with intolerant, racist views, populated largely by thugs. UKIP is a tolerant, non-racist party with inclusive policies. It is fast becoming a mainstream party whose only "controversial" policy is its intention to return the UK to an independent sovereign state, removed from the shackles of the EU.
After a lifetime of voting Conservative, my vote at the next election will go to UKIP, along with many more disillusioned former Conservative (and some Labour) voters. This will almost certainly grant Labour a landslide in 2015, and, do you know, I really don't care any more.”

“Depreg :
Excellent post. I spend much of my time in France & Spain ( where there are also many people disillusioned with the E.U.)
However, the major difference between those countries and U.K. is that it is possible over there to have a sensible debate between people of different political opinions.
In the U.K., you must accept the "politically correct" centre-left opinions of the Blair-Cameron-Clegg alliance or you are a "fascist," "racist" or "xenophobe."
I have come to the conclusion that very many people in the U.K. are just too lazy ( or stupid ) to think for themselves.”

“Eric has a long history of spouting complete rubbish in his very boring regular letters to the Leicester Mercury, but his assertion that opposition to the to the EU lies entirely with some sort of weirdo alliance of the far left and far right really takes the biscuit. I wonder if, just for once, Eric could admit that this is abject nonsense. His failure to see both sides of the EU debate is another example of his thinking and ideas which were decisively rejected by the voters at the last election.
I personally would actually vote to stay in the EU, but it is a very close call.”

“I think UKIP has a pretty rosy future. The BNP never stood a chance and would only ever have provided a 'protest' vote but Joe Bloggs has been without a voice for far too long and UKIP provides one.”

“Kohelet :
I am an historian. I certainly DO know the history of the Labour Party.
I just do not view history through red-tinted spectacles.”

“IoD members strongly support membership of the EU because of the trading gains it
bestows. Members also support the Single Market because it is seen as an important
consideration for inward investors. As a result, the IoD is fully committed to
membership of the EU. In every sense, IoD members wish to see the EU work. To
work better for the UK and to work better for the 17 million unemployed across the
EU. Source Institute of Directors briefing on the EU
So that's the IOD, the CBI, Leading Bankers, all main stream political parties and of course the sensible people of Britain
opposition to the EU lies purely at the extremities of the UK's political spectrum
Anyway I am bored with this - in Europe people talk about how to get the best out of EU membership (trade, travel, peace, science & technology etc) - our media seems obsessed with getting out of the EU - despite the economic damage it will do.
Anyway it now seems that I am not only a Communist (along with the IOD, CBI, Tory Party etc) I have been relocated to London - this is really getting very silly”

“Eric Goodyer :
I do not liken the E.U. to the Soviet Union. Do not twist my words.
But the Labour Party has a long and inglorious history of support for the Soviet Union - far worse than any Conservative support for Far right regimes.
As for the E.U., it is corrupt, inefficient, undemocratic and was sold to us by Edward Heath on a tissue of lies.
As for your attempts to portray UKIP as "far-right" - typical of the politicsof misrepresentation, innuendo and downright lies that you have indulged in ever since you entered Leicestershire politics ( from your London/Lincolnshire base.)”

“Oh why do I take this seriously!
I think it is best to confess. I was recruited into the Communist Party by Commissar Margaret Thatcher, who under instructions from Commissar Ted Heath led the Red Front into the Common Market. At a recent meeting I met up with some old comrades from that campaign – Michael Heseltine, Leon Britten & Ken Clarke – some new cadres were present as well, George Osborne, David Cameron and their intelligence chief Nick Clegg. So successful was Communist infiltration into the British Establishment our entry into the EU was led by none other than the Conservative Party, who are architects of our membership will never take us out. The CP's double bluff of openly campaigning for a NO vote in the 1975 referendum, and their continued pretence at opposing the EU was incredibly successful.
Our latest mole John Cridland of the CBI was responsible for that brilliant propaganda coup, with his New Year's message calling for Britain's continued membership of the EU, and the importance of being at the heart of its decision making processes ; no associate membership for us then.
Our City of London comrades have also done a brilliant job. As reported only this week in the Daily Telegraph - "Senior banking and business figures spoken to by The Sunday Telegraph have revealed growing disquiet at Government plans for a referendum where one option could be an exit from the EU. One senior banking executive said: The whole issue has the potential to be very destabilising for the City.". Brilliant propaganda coup – now Britain's senior bankers have been successfully infiltrated too”
