Leicester Mercury

I thought this would be a good addition for remembrance weekend, or leading up to it:

Where have they gone, those brave young men

Who fought for our freedom way back when

Our country and people were under attack

A lot of those boys did not come back

Some lie where they fell in heat of battle

Never again hearing the machine guns rattle

Some lay in a corner of some foreign field

Their lives for our life they all did yield

Some of them came home resuming their lives

Back to their families, girlfriends and wives

Some came back with wounds of all different kinds

Some came back with wounds deep in their minds

Those who returned found whole lives had changed,

Their future and ours had been rearranged,

They've lived out their lives, some still in pain

But very few of their comrades now do remain

Sadly for them they are reaching their end

But still our young boys off to war we do send

They still fight for our freedom, this new generation

To keep us all safe in this island nation

We must never forget the young or the old

They all have a story that needs to be told

So here we all are on this day in November

On this special day we must all remember

But not just this one day, but for all of time yet

Their sacrifice made, we must never forget.

Arthur Greenwood, Leicester.
