Leicester East MP Keith Vaz has paid tribute to Michael Jackson in the House of Commons.

The chair of the home affairs select committee tabled an Early Day Motion on Monday, honouring the King of Pop's career and praising the impact his music had on the world.

No other MPs had signed in support of the motion by yesterday afternoon.

Mr Vaz revealed that he and his wife, Maria, had once met Michael Jackson, in London.

He said news of the death of the singer, who sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, was a shock to everybody.

He said: "Michael was the most important and successful musician of his generation. His music had a profound impact on millions of his fans and helped to bring together people from across the world. He will be sorely missed."
