Village residents urged to fight homes proposal

Villagers are fighting new plans which could see 2,400 homes built on the edge of Leicester.

The latest battle comes on top of a major fight against the Co-op's Pennbury plans for a 15,000-home eco-town based on Leicester Airport.

The additional homes could be built in Thurnby, Bushby and Scraptoft if Harborough District Council changes its development plans to cover the next 17 years.

At present a maximum of 560 homes are due to built in an the crescent bordering Blaby, Oadby and Wigston and Leicester up to the year 2026.

But that could be raised to 2,420 if an option being considered by the council is adopted.

Residents in Thurnby, Bushby and Scraptoft are being urged to fight the proposals.

A public exhibition is being held tomorrow in Thurnby so people can register their views.

The Thurnby and Bushby Society is also leafleting homes in the area.

People have until July 20 to make comments.

District councillor Simon Galton said: "The district as a whole has to accommodate an additional 3,700 homes during the plan period.

"If the policy is changed it would be very difficult to resist developments in the green wedges that separate communities in Harborough and the outskirts of the conurbation."

The district council has also invited developers to suggest potential housing sites, many of which are in the Thurnby, Bushby and Scraptoft areas.

The public exhibition which is being held tomorrow will take place in Thurnby Memorial Hall and is open from 2pm.
