A woman has been ordered to pay back £10,000 after admitting benefit fraud.

Hardev Kaur Basra (58), of The Osiers, Braunstone Town, claimed income support, housing and council tax benefit on the basis she was a single woman. However, she was married.

Her husband was also working at the time, between October 2010 and October 2011, and they had been living together.

The case was investigated by Blaby District Council and Jobcentre Plus, which found she was not entitled to £10,813 she received.

She was give a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £200 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge. The court heard all the overpaid money was also being recovered.

Blaby Councillor John Hudson said: "This sends a clear message – people should know they run the risk of being prosecuted if they are not honest about their circumstances."
