This is Leicestershire

As an ex-Leicester lad I still keep in touch with happenings through my father's Mercury and was particularly interested in the report on poaching from the River Soar and the comments of Mr Woodgett, of the Quorn Angling Society, (Mercury, January 21).

For centuries ordinary folk have been denied access to the edible fish stocks of the rivers and lakes of this country, going way back to the days of William Shakespeare and beyond. Commoners could starve as long as the rich and privileged had their game sports.

I find it quite repugnant that people in need of food are denied access just so the few can enjoy teasing the life out of some innocent creature in the name of a so-called sport.

Fishing is the last blood sport left in this country and it is high time it went the way of cock fighting, bull baiting and fox hunting and was made unlawful unless for consumption.

Jon Lakin, Shrewsbury.

“By the way, it is by no means the last so called "blood sport" (in fact fishing is not a blood sport at all). It also has over 3 million licence holders in the UK. We still have Wildfowling, deer stalking, vermin shooting, and game bird shooting. So i think you need to do your homework before writing in.”

“This letter was so daft I thought it was by Elizabeth the veggie queen.”

“I confess I find it difficult to see the appeal in dragging a creature out of its element only to weigh it and throw it back. However, many anglers are 'respectful' to the fish and are the eyes and ears of the riverbank. Some are pretty hopeless and leave their litter behind but the vast majority are a harmless bunch. Poaching is another matter altogether!”

“What a pathetic letter, suggesting fishing is the "last blood sport"!! It would appear the writer is in need of something positive to do.”
