The Department of Health has recently issued advice to reduce red meat consumption.

The World Wildlife Fund and Friends of the Earth have given similar advice for environmental as well as for health reasons. Other organisations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, have been advocating a reduction in meat eating for years.

Fish stocks are in rapid decline and today's chicken contains three times more fat and 30 per cent less protein than it did in 1970.

It seems to be an appropriate time to mention that March is Animal Aid's Veggie Month. Animal Aid is a long-established organisation which promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle and meat-free diet. Anyone interested in reducing or eliminating meat from their diet should visit:

Mrs Elizabeth Allison, Aylestone.

“Matthias, to be fair and i fyou are going to be picky, you have not looked carefully at what David wrote. He has not misquoted Nicki - look where he put the quotes. He then added his own comment, that is how I read is anyway. He agreed with Nicki, then went on to say you shouldn't ram it down peoples throats. David I am sure represents many - Elizabeth is asking lots of others to change what they do, David is asking one person to change what they are doing. :)”

“You couldn't resist it David could you, this time you've misquoted Nikki. She did not say 'each to their own without ramming it down peoples throats' and reading her comment she was actually agreeing with myself and pam in that Elizabeth Allison is doing no such thing.

The fact that you and others have decided to infer that Elizabeth is 'ramming her opinion down your throats' or that she is a self-proclaimed expert says a lot more about you than her.

'They seek him there' summed it up brilliantly, yet the irony is probably lost on you. I'm sorry but Elizabeth is simply putting forward her opinion on a subject she believes in. Her comments are not aimed at anyone personally, she is providing what she feels is information to the general public. You are not, you are making snide comments about her based on your own personal prejudices.

In short (if only), you deserve abuse, she doesn't. Simples :)”

“It's now obvious that the letters editor at the Leicester Mercury prints Ms Allison letters to wind us all up.”

“@David, Great EastonThe fact of the matter is that this person over some considerable time has become a self-proclaimed authority or so she would have us believe.

Takes one to know one. You seem to have an opinion on everything and nothing.”

“m, I wouldn't necessarily agree with you that the most expensive cuts of meat are the tastiest. Some of the cheaper cuts are far more tasty than the most expensive. But you have to know how to cook them. It's no use trying to flash fry a piece of brisket as you would a piece of fillet steak. But cook it long and slow and it has far more flavour than the fillet.”

“@Dan, Loughborough - thanks. I think my comments are relevant to the letter which is about 'advice to reduce red meat consumption'. Suggesting people become vegetarian for a month is one approach, suggesting they buy less but more expensive high quality meat is another.”

“m, I agree with your comments but the quality of food is an entirely different discussion from those who will not eat any animal meat or derivative. Essential fish oils spring to mind as on balance a healthy thing in general and for certain conditions (balanced against the risk of concentrated chemicals from the environment moving up the food chain).

Lets not forget though that you can be veggie and have a really unhealthy diet. As part of the change however people normally look into it in a bit more detail so actually learn more about food, which is always a good thing. There is also less ready made veggie rubbish - probably for the same reason.

I would still suspect that the majority of vegitarians are so because it involves killing animals with health as a secondary issue.”

“Matthias, you accept as I do that Ms.Allison is entitled to her opinion. Just as I am without the abuse!!

The fact of the matter is that this person over some considerable time has become a self-proclaimed authority or so she would have us believe.

Nikki is quite right, "each to their own" without ramming it down people's throat at every opportunity!!”
