A former school governor drunkenly stabbed his wife twice in the head.

Jayesh Sharma (44) set upon his wife during a row about money.

Their three children, who were in the house, did not witness the blows but saw blood pouring from their mother's wounds.

Sharma, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 16 months at Leicester Crown Court yesterday, after admitting unlawful wounding on October 30.

Prosecutor Victoria Rose said: "He put his right hand inside his jacket pocket and produced a knife.

"He raised it above his head and brought it down in a stabbing movement on to the top of her head.

"His mother, who was present at the home in Thurmaston, tried to intervene. He then stabbed his wife again.

"His mother was then able to get the knife off him."

The victim was taken to hospital with two puncture wounds, which were glued. She also had a scratched neck and a sore face.

Sentencing, Judge Michael Pert said: "It was carried out in the presence of your children and mother, who had to witness what was going on, although they only saw a part of it.

"Mercifully, the injuries weren't as serious as they might have been. I accept what has been said about the good qualities you exhibited until this time."

Sharma was a governor at Roundhill Community College, Thurmaston, last year, the court was told.

He had a successful career in advertising – including previously working for the Leicester Mercury – although he was made redundant in 2006.

The court heard the couple, who married in 1990, were having relationship difficulties because of the defendant's drinking.

Miss Rose said that the wife said she was going to start divorce proceedings.

The defendant was made the subject of a restraining order banning any contact with her other than through solicitors.

Luke Blackburn, in mitigation, said: "He has no previous convictions and until this incident was a good and useful member of the community.

"He'd had a good deal to drink and has no useful memory of what happened.

"He doesn't rely on drink as an excuse, although it plainly had a role."

“Knew Jayesh once very very well. Same primary, secondary and grew up in same Streets!!!!. lost touch many years ago, but heard he was working hard and dedicated to his family. I am no fan of Jayesh but can say this was very out of character that i grew up with. He was the calmest of calm people and i can only assume his life pressures and drink issue's have led to his downfall. He will do his time and be out early if i know him. He will repair his life with help from brother and family i hope. Its his 3 kids who i feel for not Jayesh. --Anon-- who was there when he broke his finger off a chair at school and helped his dad when he fell from loft.”

“I am sure they did the checks on Mr. Jayesh Sharma such as the CRB one which should have shown him to be clear of any previous crimes? But what about a character reference on him as he was reported as a drinker and having money problems? From the report it sounds as though he was drinking and showing signs of distress for awhile? So if they did this check on him they might have seen some signs of odd behaviour? I am very glad he did not try to hurt his own children or the ones at the school, but sadly his wife was victim to his wrong deeds. I wish he can get help for his problems so he will never try this again.”

“@Jani88 - I am not sure how any check of school governors (or anyone else for that matter) could foresee that they would commit a violent crime in the future? If the criteria for rejecting candidates is that they have the potential to commit a violent crime, then our schools would be devoid of governors (teachers and pupils too).

Although the crime in this story is a very nasty one, there is not the slightest suggestion that any pupils of the school in which he was a governor were ever at any risk. I'd go so far as to say that mentioning him ever being a governor is irrelevant to the story. Why not the title "Former Mercury employee stabbed wife in drunken argument".”

“They cannot check school governors very well in schools which worries me the most. The event here is horrible, the man clearly is not right in his head and his crime is appalling on his own wife.”

“there can be no excuses, he is responsible for his actions, violent men need putting away.”
