Villagers pay tribute to cyclist killed in crash
David Grundy, 70, a familiar figure on the roads of south Leicestershire, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, on the A5199 Leicester to Northampton Road, on Wednesday morning.
He was riding his cycle when he was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Astra, south of Shearsby at 9.30am. Both vehicles were travelling towards Husbands Bosworth.
The 70-year-old car driver was uninjured. He was arrested by police and later released pending further inquiries.
Mr Grundy lived with his wife Janet in Gilmorton, near Lutterworth, for more than 20 years.
Today, villagers paid tribute to the "cheery man'' who loved cycling and gardening.
Dick Morgan said: "It is a terrible tragedy. He was well liked throughout the village. I knew him in connection with the gardening club. He was a very active man and we all feel for his family at this terrible time."
David Dolby said: "David told me recently he was going to pack up cycling. But he was so enthusiastic about it. He loved riding his bike. I know he had been a racing cyclist for many years and was still taking part in competitions until recently.
"He used to cycle between 20 and 30 miles virtually every day. He was an extremely fit man.''
In a message on the Mercury website, Darren Earp, of Cosby, said: "As a fellow cyclist I have often met him out on the roads around south Leicestershire and this really brings it home.
"I will miss his cheery 'hello'. He was a member of the Ratae Road Club and was a keen time trialist. He was such a friendly man. It is a great loss."
Police believe a lorry driver, who was travelling along the A5199, from Husbands Bosworth towards Shearsby, may have seen the collision, or events leading up to it.
Detective Sergeant Ivan Stafford said: "We are also keen to trace the drivers of a green Renault Clio and a car transporter vehicle which may have witnessed this incident."
He asked anyone with any information to contact Det Sgt Stafford on 0116 222 2222.
