In Leicester, Town Hall Square was the place for children to have a go at rock climbing, den making, fishing and reading in the Leicester Library book bus.
Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Roger Blackmore, described the event as an "outstanding success".
He said: "It's wonderful to see so many children with a big smile on their faces.
"The activities are fantastic and we are delighted to have this event here in Leicester."
Events were also held in Hinckley, Loughborough and Market Harborough.
Grandmother of two, Faye Lewin, was at the Leicester event. She said: "There's not enough activities like this for children. It's a really good idea and it's great to see the kids having fun. They especially enjoyed fishing for rubber ducks in the fountain and reading through the book bus."
Organisers recruited "junior reporters" and asked them to carry out surveys to gather opinions from parents and children on the importance of play.
Bria Turner (11), from Aylestone, said: "I think play is important because it keeps me active. We're asking people what they think by getting them to fill out questionnaires. So far I've done 70 and hope to get more."
