Too much space given to vegetarian's views

Is it really fair to keep publishing the monotonous and idiosyncratic views of Elizabeth Allison ("I'm appalled that exotic animals are now on the menu", Mailbox, April 7)?

Have you such a small contribution to Mailbox that she is given all-too-regular space for vegetarianism and its associated subjects? The very fact that we, the human race, are supposedly at the top of the food chain and so are free to choose what we eat should be enough justification for eating meat.

I, for one, and I suppose there are many more, am sick to the back teeth of her constant criticism of meat eaters! Get a life, or better still visit a zoo and find out if the animals have any such reservations about eating meat, human too.

As we, according to Ms Allison, are all God's creatures, why are the rules so different for humans?

The type of reasoning she applies to justify her beliefs are strange indeed, one sided and irrational.

Time she gave it all a rest because she will never stop the rest of us eating what we choose to.

Ray Watson, Leicester.

“This newspaper is meant to be impartial and show a balanced view, but in reality most of the time it only shows one side of the story and tends not to allow constructive criticism especially where certain storylines are concerned.”

“OK now we have done this to death can we move on now? Veggies don't like the thought of animals being killed, Meat eaters clearly don't care.... Right I have got it. Surely there is nothing more to say on this one.”

“I believe Paul McCartney said 'I will never eat anything that has a face'. I have never met/ate a vegetable that has demonstrated affection for its offspring, it may be a poor argument but it works for me. Mammals show affection and feel pain, therefore I cannot and will not eat them.. My choice. Sorry to be opionionated but I've always believed slaughter house workers to be a form of contract killer for those who wouldn't have the necessary conviction to do the necessary as it were..”

“I've noticed a few of the letters and they are a little tiresome - I suspect the Mercury prints them because they get equally tiresome responses from those that enjoy a bit off "veggie-baiting".

I dont think you can draw a universal conclusion about people on the basis of their diet - sweeping statements like "meat eaters live and let live" or "vegetarians are more peaceful" are pointless.

If you are an intolerant person generally, then you will be an intolerant meat-eater, or an intolerant vegetarian, or an intolerant fruitarian (if you have the strength!).”

    “Karin,

hink of those poor living carrots, potatoes etc that die to feed your insatiable need for vegetables. There are also the half or plastic veggies that also eat fish. A definate misnomer to have a fish eating veggie.

But back on the point, you are right. Elizabeth bores the pants off me as well. However, I do respect her right to her opinion, I just wish she wouldn't try to ram it down everyone throats ALL the time.”

“Sorry Kulgan, "live and let live", isn't that what we veggies do?? Elizabeth bores the pants off me. However, I quietly choose not to eat animals because ..... I live and let live...”

“The reason there are not many (if any at all) supporting the eating of meat is that it is a natural thing and us 'meat eaters' live and let live. If a person wants to be a vegetarian, that is there choice and we respect that. We do not crusade that people should eat meat.”
