A charity which supports homeless and vulnerable people is appealing for donations of clothes, food and Christmas gifts for the winter.

The Open Hands Trust, in Highfields, Leicester, always faces an increase in demand as temperatures plummet.

Senior manager Sue Smout said they are looking for clothing donations of any kind, but small-sized men's garments in particular, as well as food and household items.

She said: "There is a need for more help around this time of year, so donations are vitally important for an organisation such as Open Hands Trust."

The charity, which was set up in 2006, helps homeless and vulnerable people of more than 100 different nationalities.

It gives out clothes, furniture, household items and baby equipment. There is also a free café serving hot toast, drinks and snacks.

Marc, 51, said the charity had made a big difference.

"I have been coming here since it opened," he said. "Without this here, many people would have a poorer quality of life. The difference with Open Hands is the fact that they really do care.

"The volunteers here become your friends – they treat you like a human and never turn anyone away."

The trust is supported by volunteers including Andrew Brown, 21, who has been an intern there for two months.

He said: "I do this because I enjoy helping people – it's great to see people leave with a smile on their face, that's the best reward."

The charity holds women-only sessions on Tuesdays from 10am to midday.

On Tuesday evenings, from 7pm to 8pm, it serves hot meals, including a vegetarian option.

A session for men and women is held on Thursdays, from 10am to midday. Call Sue on 0116 255 8672, or visit:
