City report: Mis-hit turns to gold

Monday, October 06, 2008, 09:30

Leicester City's Lloyd Dyer already has some goal-of-the- season contenders to his name but it is safe to say his stoppage-time winner at Huddersfield on Saturday will not be added to the list.

The home side, seemingly down and out at 2-0 down thanks to a Matty Fryatt double, were given a lifeline when Gary Roberts scored with the help of a deflection.

Then, with 13 minutes left, lone striker Liam Dickinson headed home a leveller.

The game was heading for a draw when City surged forward again in the first minute of added time, and Fryatt found Dyer in the area for a mis-cued attempt which looped over stranded goalkeeper Matt Glennon.

The Blue Army behind the goal went wild, City sent on extra defender Michael Morrison to see out the remainder of the game and what would have felt like a game thrown away was suddenly won – as it really should have been anyway.

It was cruel on Town but great for City who underlined their table-topping position, going three points clear with next Saturday's blank date looming.

Such drama looked a distant prospect in a scrappy first half although City, unchanged again, made their usual instant impact. They gained a corner inside 40 seconds and had a blustery wind at their backs, although that was sometimes more of a hindrance because forward passes were overhit.

The first real chance arrived when a Dyer cross from the left was headed wide by Nicky Adams.

Soon afterwards, at the other end, a Michael Flynn header went straight at David Martin.

Town, like others before them against City, employed only one up front, so the visitors posed more of a threat.

City should have gone ahead just before the break when Fryatt, clean through, had his finish well saved by Glennon, who later tipped over another Fryatt attempt for a corner from which Steve Howard had a shot blocked. But, five minutes after the break, City took the lead.

Great work by Adams led to a perfect pass through to Fryatt who ran on and sent a clinical finish wide of Glennon.

Town were not beaten yet although they were hit again in the 64th minute when a Dyer cross was handled in the area by Jim Goodwin and Fryatt made no mistake from the spot.

It was just reward for Fryatt who not only took his goal tally for the season to nine but also, as he always does, gave another powerful, selfless display alongside the equally valuable Howard, and this time got what he deserved.

Game over? Far from it – moments later Roberts was clean through only for Martin make a great save from his close-in drive. But Roberts did beat the keeper in the 68th minute, rather luckily when his shot rebounded off Jack Hobbs to wrong-foot Martin and raise home spirits.

City were then on the back foot for the odd spell and, in the 77th minute, a high cross from Goodwin on the right swirled in on the wind and was headed home by Dickinson on the far post for the equaliser.

But, just when Town felt they had saved themselves, and City thought they had shot themselves in the foot, up stepped Dyer for his late, late show.
