Derby are 'pretty close' to landing DJ Campbell

Nigel Clough says Derby are "pretty close" to securing a loan deal for Leicester City striker DJ Campbell.

The Derby manager has made an official approach to secure the player's services before today's 5pm deadline for loan deals in the Football League.

Clough admits they face opposition from Sheffield Wednesday, but he remains confident that Campbell, 28, will opt for Derby.

Clough, who already has striker Paul Dickov on loan from City, said: "I think we're pretty close and I believe the lad wants to come and join us.

"I believe we are facing competition from Sheffield Wednesday but, geographically, we are in the best position, not too far away from Leicester for him, and he would be a good addition for us if we can get it sorted."

City are keen to allow Campbell time away from the Walkers Stadium and supporters' groups feel a switch could have dual benefits.

Lance Tomlyn, chairman of the Independent Supporters Association, said: "There might be advantages to a loan move for both parties as it keeps him fit, and he could get into a bit of form which may benefit us when he comes back.

"I don't have a problem with DJ going out on loan. If you look at the number of strikers we have, DJ is a long way down the pecking order.

"Matty Fryatt and Martyn Waghorn are the strikers in the positions, and both Yann Kermorgant and Paul Gallagher can play up there and I would put Steve Howard, who can only get on the bench, ahead of DJ."

Supporters Club chairman Cliff Ginnetta sympathises with Campbell's situation, but is concerned that the temporary switch could come at a time when City are high in the table but short on goals.

Third-placed City have scored 20 goals – the third lowest tally among the Championship's top 10 – and Ginnetta said: "I'm slightly worried because we've not been blessed with a lot of goals, but then I can't see DJ getting in the team.

"If he goes to Derby there will be a few fans unhappy at the choice, but it's in our interests to help keep them up as it guarantees a big gate at the Walkers. I'd rather lose the likes of Plymouth and Scunthorpe."
