Derby want Leicester City striker DJ Campbell on loan

Derby County are lining up a loan move for Leicester City striker DJ Campbell.

It is believed the Rams have made a second enquiry about the 27-year-old Londoner following an attempt to take Campbell to Pride Park last month failed.

Derby enquired about Campbell after on-loan striker James Vaughan picked up a knee injury that required surgery.

Derby and City could not agree on a deal at the time but Rams boss Nigel Clough is short of strikers and is particularly keen to add some pace to his attack.

Vaughan has now undergone an operation on a torn cartilage and could return to Derby in January, but Clough is keen to bring in a replacement now.

"One thing that stood out was a lack of pace. I don't think we had any throughout the side," said Clough after Derby's 1-0 defeat at Swansea on Friday night.

"We've talked about it for the last few months and we've not really got any pace in the squad at the moment.

"We will be trying to bring some pace in, either on loan or permanent. We brought James Vaughan in for that reason and he got injured.

"Someone with pace would be ideal but there are not too many of them around. We'll try to get anybody we can. We are talking about one or two options at the moment and have put enquiries in to one or two clubs, so we'll wait and see."

Campbell had a successful spell at Blackpool on loan last season, scoring nine times in 20 appearances, but a permanent move fell through because of his wages.

QPR and Coventry have also shown an interest in Campbell but no deals have been agreed.

After it seemed he had no future at the Walkers Stadium, the former Brentford and Birmingham striker has recently been brought back into the first-team fold by City boss Nigel Pearson, but he has been used only as a substitute.

Pearson has stated publicly that Campbell still has a role within his squad but he is not short of striking options.

As well as Matty Fryatt, Steve Howard and Paul Gallagher, Pearson is trying to secure French striker Yann Kermorgant on a long-term contract as his current deal at the club expires in January.

Martyn Waghorn is due to return to Sunderland next month but City are also trying to extend the young striker's stay until the end of the season.

City's veteran striker Paul Dickov is currently on loan at Derby.
