Dissent rap for Leicestershire CCC pace bowler Iain O'Brien

Leicestershire fast bowler Iain O'Brien has been reprimanded under the ECB discipline code following his reaction to his dismissal against Essex in the championship match at Grace Road last Friday.

The New Zealander appeared to question the decision of umpire Steve Garratt after he had been given out caught behind, O'Brien believing that the ball had clipped the stumps rather than his bat on its way through to wicketkeeper James Foster.

O'Brien apologised immediately afterwards and senior coach Tim Boon said the seamer was "full of remorse."

However, he was reported by umpires Garratt and John Holder for a level one breach of the code, the lowest level, which is showing dissent to an umpire's decision by word or action. O'Brien has subsequently received a reprimand.

The County's overseas player will be with New Zealand in Sri Lanka next month for a two-Test series, though he will return for the championship fixtures at home to Glamorgan and away to Kent in September.

Leicestershire chief executive David Smith saw the incident and had no argument with the reprimand.

"It is standard procedure," said former Warwickshire opener Smith. "You cannot show dissent to any decision or we will end up challenging every decision."
