Leicestershire amateur golfer Jake Amos has been handed an Open Championship reprieve after missing out on the chance of a play-off..

The Kilworth Springs ace left the regional qualifying event at Coventry thinking he had no chance of going through, only to find out he had gained a place in a play-off.

He failed to arrive back at the course in time because of heavy traffic.

He was, however, made first reserve from the region, fifth reserve overall, and he has now been given a place in a final qualifying tournament for the Open, which starts at Turnberry later this month.

He will play at Kilmarnock Barassie in the final qualifier over 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday.

Amos said: "After missing out at Coventry when I was delayed getting back in heavy traffic and being just a reserve, I was still hoping to get a chance to play in final qualifying. So I was extremely pleased to get a telephone call from the R&A to say I was in.

"Now it is up to me to make my best shot.

"There are only four spots into the Open from each of the three courses.

"I know it will be tough though, especially when you look at the strength of the fields. At Kilmarnock Barassie, for example, Jose-Maria Olazabal is set to be among the competitors."

Former top county amateur Gary Wolstenholme, now a professional, also plays at Kilmarnock Barassie, and Amos is hoping to have a practice round with him.

Whetstone professional Craig Shave has been drawn at Western Gailes, where leading Americans Brad Faxon and Fred Couples are competing.

Shave was exempt into final qualifying following his top-10 finish in last year's Glenmuir Club Professionals Championship at Moortown.

Another former County amateur, Lee Clarke, who is now a professional, is also drawn there.

He claimed his place from the Enville qualifier.

The other final qualifying course is Glasgow Gailes, where Staffordshire amateur Jared McKnight, a former Loughborough University student, is drawn.
