Joe Mattock is set for Leicester City backlash

Former Leicester City favourite Joe Mattock is likely to receive a backlash from the fans who once sang his name.

The 19-year-old left-back returns to the Walkers Stadium with his new club West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Mattock, who came through the ranks at City, angered the Blue Army when he handed in a transfer request and then joined Championship rivals West Brom in August in a deal believed to be potentially worth nearly £2million.

He then incensed the City supporters when he was quoted as saying he felt Albion were better placed to fulfil his ambitions and that he had felt he had done enough at City.

As a result, Lance Tomlyn of the Independent Supporters Association believes City fans will love to beat Albion on Saturday solely because of Mattock's remarks.

"I think it all comes down to what he said about wanting to move to a bigger club," said Tomlyn.

"It was ill-advised and he should have been told not to say that.

"What upset me was when he said he had done his shift for the club. He had only been in the first team for a couple of seasons!

"Fans don't like it when players say it is their dream come true to play for the club and then leave six months later.

"They will want the win on Saturday for that reason, not just because it will see City jump above Albion."

Cliff Ginnetta, chairman of the Leicester City Supporters Club, is expecting Mattock, right, to receive a frosty reception if he plays on Saturday but hopes City supporters will be fair to the teenager from Eyres Monsell.

"There may be a backlash from the terraces over the way he left and what he said," said Ginnetta, who has known Mattock since he was a youngster coming through the ranks at City.

"He is a young lad and sometimes young players say things they shouldn't, but he has to face the consequences.

"I hope the fans are fair to him because he is home-grown and one of their own. I think people forget how young he is."

Matt Davis, spokesman for the Foxes Trust, said many fans believe Mattock was misguided in his belief that leaving City was good for his career.

"There is no real difference between us and West Brom," he said. "They are a yo-yo club and the only difference is they have the parachute payments at the moment which allow them a bigger squad.

"I think winning the game would show that he hasn't necessarily made the right decision."
