Leeds United open talks to extend Max Gradel loan spell

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson has revealed he has opened talks with Nigel Pearson about extending Max Gradel's loan spell at Elland Road.

The 21-year-old winger has made a big impression at Leeds after joining them on a one-month loan last month and Grayson is keen to persuade Pearson to let Gradel stay for longer.

Grayson said after Tuesday night's 3-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Grimsby Town, which was the last game Gradel was eligible for, that he had already held a conversation with the City boss.

"We've had conversations with Nigel at Leicester and we will have another one and try to extend it," said Grayson.

"We don't need to press ahead as we don't have a game on Saturday and it will be Leicester's decision.

"If he has to go back to Leicester we will wish him well and thank them for allowing him to come to us in the first place, but hopefully we will be able to agree something.

"I think he would like to come back. He has fitted in really well, he is a bubbly character and he's done really well for us."

Pearson said he allowed Gradel to go out on loan because the Ivorian would find his opportunities limited at the Walkers Stadium at the moment.

While it is unlikely Pearson would consider a permanent transfer, he may allow Gradel to stay at Leeds until January.

Gradel has made it known that he would be interested in staying at Leeds.

"Yeah, as long as I'm going to be involved and playing some games," he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"That's what I'm looking for, first-team football. As long as I'm going to play I think it would be a good idea.

"At the moment it's difficult at Leicester because I'm not playing a lot. Any player that isn't playing is never very happy.

"I extended my Leicester contract last year, but at the moment I'm struggling to play and would do anything for first-team football."

Meanwhile, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has also hinted he is considering allowing Martyn Waghorn to extend his stay at Leicester.

The 19-year-old's loan spell finishes in January and Pearson has hinted he is looking to persuade Bruce to extend the loan for the rest of the season.

Bruce has not ruled that out and said he was pleased with the progress Waghorn, and of fellow loanee Jack Colback at Ipswich Town, is making.

"I am a big believer that young players should go find out what the real world is like," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.

"Waghorn is at the top end of the division and Jack is at the other end but they are both playing first-team football and learning what it is all about.

"I am hoping that Waghorn and Colback will make an impact."
