Leicester Tigers target back-to-back Euro wins

Two wins in seven days would be enough to book Leicester Tigers a place in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals, according to head coach Richard Cockerill.

Tigers cross the Channel on Sunday to play the first of back-to-back games against French giants Clermont Auvergne.

Pool Three is nicely poised with Tigers on eight points after two games, two ahead of Clermont and the Ospreys.

Cockerill thinks it will be 'job done' with two matches left if his side can back up a win in France with one at Welford Road the following weekend for they are virtually guaranteed a five-pointer at home to Italian side Viadana.

"Lose on Sunday and it is not the end of the world but we need to take something out of the game," he said.

"If we win these two games back-to-back, we will qualify. There is no doubt about that.

"Our task is simple. We need to keep 16,000 Frenchmen sat on their backsides and not shouting. We need to have a good set piece and play well when the pressure is on because it will definitely come on at some stage.

"The band will start playing and there is going to be a lot of noise and a partizan crowd against us. We need to take that as motivation."

Cockerill knows what to expect from a Clermont side who are fourth in the French Top 14 (French domestic league) and have started their European campaign with a home win over Viadana and a one-point defeat at the Ospreys.

The 38-year-old spent two years at the club between 2002 and 2004 before returning to Leicester.

"It's a good city and a great part of the world. I wouldn't mind coaching in France one day. It's a great place to live, their rugby is very different and I like the place. But I have a lot to do here first."

Cockerill will have not far off a full deck of cards to pick from with only Geordan Murphy, Richard Blaze, Ben Woods and Lucas Amorosino on the long-term injured list.

However, England duo Sam Vesty and Harry Ellis will not be making the trip despite making successful comebacks from injury in the Development XV's win over Sale on Monday night.

Vesty and centre Billy Twelvetrees could be farmed out on loan to get some game time though while their colleagues do battle in France.

Props Martin Castrogiovanni and Boris Stankovich are both fit for the trip having missed last week's defeat at Wasps.

Cockerill said there could be a few changes to the squad for the match against a side who may well give up on the Heineken Cup if they lose to Leicester at the Stade Marcel Michelin.

"We will pick the team that we think will do the right job at the weekend," said Cockerill.

"There may be some changes in the team from the last two or three weeks.

"It is fair to say that the Top 14 would be their priority because they have been to 10 finals and have never won one.

"That is the Holy Grail as far as they are concerned. It's the same with all of the French clubs. If they can win their championship, it is huge for them.

"You cannot say they are not interested because Toulouse are the most successful side in European history.

"But for a lot of those sides, if they are going to win anything, they would probably prefer to win the French championship."
