The woman, who managed to get out of the flat, was also taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.
It is understood the couple have two children, who escaped the flat safely.
Firefighters and police helped to evacuate the 14 flats in the three-storey block.
They said the blaze was an accident, caused by combustible materials being left too close to an electric heater.
A file is being prepared by the police for the coroner and an inquest into the man's death is expected to open this week.
