Looking to change our website comments
We are planning to alter the way we allow people to comment on our website, but would like to know what you think before we introduce any changes.
We would like to make the comment functionality on thisisleicestershire available 24 hours a day and have a lighter touch in our moderation. We think the best way to do this would be to introduce mandatory registration for those of you who wish to comment and then ask for community volunteers to help with the moderation.

Send in your views
We also plan to introduce clear guidelines for what's acceptable - these will not be onerous, but are likely to include a ban on anything libellous or illegal, along with most swearing and personal abuse. They will not prevent people from criticising the Leicester Mercury or each other.
Currently, you do not need to register with our site to comment - anybody can come along and add their views in just a few moments and without us having any idea who they are.
We believe that asking people to register and validate their e-mail address is more likely to create some form of bond with the site and will lead to more self-moderation and, therefore, a more reasoned debate.
What we'd like to know is whether or not you think these proposed changes are a good idea. Please leave your comments here - between 9am and 4pm.

“John - Can't really argue with what you say, it all stemmed from one comment I made which I then got half a dozen or so people (or maybe just 1) attacking me for. I should have ignored it but didn't and things escalated.
I'm not J, and you'll see that if they bring in registration, I just agreed with the point he was making. Big mistake I guess, just opens the door for people to get personal.
Anyway, regarding the original story and Jim's comment, it does seem as though there are differing opinions on the purpose of these pages. Some people want to leave a quick comment and that's it, some people like to have a discussion. To give everyone what they want, perhaps there could be a comments page, as Jim suggested with one comment per user and a word limit (that would really scupper me wouldn't it!) and a separate discussion forum, where people who struggle to condense their thoughts into concise 1 or 2 paragraphs or those who like a lively debate (not a slanging match) can be left to get on with it. The comments page could run as it already does 9-4 and the forum 24 hrs.
As for moderation, I also think their should be less censorship of opinions, but only in relation to the story, if people start verbally attacking others cut them off.”

“Yes, lighter touch from the LM so you don't remove controversial comments (that aren't libellous or illegal) due to some simple fear of offending some group or other. Yes registration - anonymity can be used as a mask. Also - limit the length to 1,000 characters or so, it's currently too large. Allow people to post only 1 comment on each article so we don't get mud-slinging tennis matches, as per the comments on this page.”

“Hi Rich, I am glad we are now friends, J thanks for the information. Well here goes. I am 57 and from Derby originally but now live in the city centre. I am a post op TS and like to go by the name of Fiona. I work in the city centre at a popular night spot. I enjoy reading and theatre. It is good that we can now all get along and be open.”

“Rich, without wanting to sound like a lonely hearts ad; I'm 39, white, male, married, and am a Northerner (born in the UK).”

“Thank you John. I feel moderating the LM would in theory be a good idea but like anything it depends who is doing the moderating. Providing they have no hidden agenda then it should work well. I would say however that I would question anyone's motives who volunteers to be a moderator - especially 24-7 as most people would have their own lives and not want to be moderating a news site that is nothing to do with them and takes them away from their families. Therefore caution should be used when volunteers come forwards. I certainly will not be putting myself forward. Also this could be a case of the LM saving money on wages.”

“This is so amusing to read what is probably 2 people being everyone. A little like John Cleese from Faulty Towers. It is quite clear Pam or whoever is trying to wind Matt (j) and each time they are biting. My advice to Matt is the more you bite which you are doing, the more whoever will wind you up. This forum should be changed to the 'wind matt up' forum and then just the 2 people can stay on it all day, whilst the rest of us comment on serious subject matter. One last point. Everyone is claiming to be intelligent. However, I feel it clear that a true intelligent person would not allow themselves to be wound up so easily and also resort in what appears to be a compulsive obessive behavioural way to get people to listen to their points. Sometimes a gentle simple comment can clearly get your point across and you do not need to repeat it 4000 times to get people to see what you are saying. I lay a challenge to both Matt, Pam etc - lets see if the real intelligent one of you can literally cease to attack the other in any form whatsoever and drop the argument. This will clearly show who the real intelligent one is. And before you both are tempted to do so, even a sly remark etc would deem you childish and not intelligent. To be intelligent is not to tell someone you are but to show it in actions. We will wait and see. To the rest of us - can we please get back on track and if these two characters continue then we should all simply ignore anything they say.”

“It is quite clear that few people on here can match me for intelligent debate. J (aka Matt) has agained failed and it makes my day to he is so frustrated that he keeps posting on here under different names. A sure sign of intelligence (or lack of.lol) I challenge you Matt as Matt is your real name and not J, I challenge you to say something which demonstrates a brain larger than a pea. You are clearly not as educated as me and you are simply taking words from online as you do seem capable of arguing a point in a clear way. Thanks for making my day. I think you simply sit on here all day waiting for me to post so you can bite back /// i envy your free time. Keep trying and one day you may actually say something that makes sense, although forgive me if I do not hold my breath.”

“It's not a competition Jane, you've won nothing you've lost nothing. There is no result for anyone to 'see'.
I am honest enough to admit my short comings, because lets face it, we all have some. I think that takes some maturity and intelligence.
Whereas YOUR parting comment shows.....well....I promised I wouldn't stoop to childish insults so less said about that the better eh. ;) Have a lovely day.”
