Why are we waiting for 20mph limit?
For well over four years the "forgotten" villagers of Humberstone have been waiting to feel safe.
Why? Well may you ask! While many other busy streets have had 20mph speed limits imposed – some in Humberstone/Hamilton Ward itself – the village Main Street is left severely alone at 30mph. We now know that a further 120 streets are also considered for 20mph limits.
Maidenwell Avenue (on an estate barely 30 years old and passing just one school) has a 20mph limit.
Keyham Lane West, as it passes Hamilton College, has a 20mph limit. Traffic-calming "bumps" can be seen on Netherhall Road and Ivychurch Crescent.

However, our Main Street (far older) has: one large "blind bend"; a double chicane that would do Donington Park motor racing circuit proud; passes two schools, three road junctions, a small shopping area, entrances to small estates, St Mary's churchyard entrance and several houses.
The Highway Code says that, at 20mph, drivers have more time to react and stop. Some drivers passing along our Main Street seem unaware of this. Why is beyond us. Our councillors and MP seemed to back our campaign and even appeared in Mercury pictures in support.
Lately, however, that support has been mere words and no action.
Surely we have a basic human right to feel safe? Are we to wait for injury or worse before "something is done", I wonder?
Will our councillors listen and prove that they really are "Working for us?"
